Closing Date Wednesday, 19th August 2020
Applications are invited to work on a PhD at the Nottingham Transportation Engineering Centre, at the University of Nottingham, in the field of self-healing asphalt.
The successful candidate will use the accelerated pavement testing facility at the University of Nottingham and onsite testing in order to characterise the degradation of asphalt due to traffic loading and a range of environmental conditions, such as temperature, moisture, and UV ageing. Furthermore, the student will work on the development of predictive mathematical, or machine learning, based models of asphalt surfaces degradation in order to calculate the worth of self-healing asphalt.
The project will require periodical supervision meetings with road managers and contractors.
Due to the nature of the project, the following skills would be desirable in the successful candidate:
* Common sense
* The capacity and interest to do laboratory work
* Reasonably good mathematical abilities
* Good English level (IELTS above 6.5 will be required)
Candidates must hold a good honours degree or equivalent in an engineering topic or be able to demonstrate equivalent experience.
This is a 3-year programme. The start date is October 2020. The studentship includes fees and a tax-free stipend of £15,285 per annum. Please note that due to funding restrictions, current funding is available to UK/EU nationals only.
