European Research Area (ERA): Research Engineer (PhD) position in the field of ‘An Integrated optimization tool of flexible storage (thermal/electrochemical) under a mobility sharing scheme in presence of local renewable sources towards Net-Zero Energy Building(s) in District level’.
The University of Mons (UMONS) located in the Walloon Region of Belgium, by the intermediate of its Research Institute for Energy (RIE) and its Net Zero Energy City Districts (NZED) unit has been selected for creating an ERA-Chair Team headed by the ERA-Chair Holder for building a strong, sustainable and highly-performing Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I) platform in the field of Energy Efficiency in City Districts. This is according to the concept of UMONS set-up measures and actions at the level of the Institution and the ERA-Chair hosting departments for creating the best environment and conditions for achieving an ambitious R&D&I program aligned with the smart specialization priorities already initiated by the regional authorities for its socio-economic successful growth and with the European priorities within the European Research Area (ERA). The principal technical objectives of the RE-SIZED (Research Excellence for Solutions and Implementation of Net Zero Energy City Districts, www.resized.info/) are concentrated on the combination of six major research areas: i) urban planning and environmental assessment (including sustainable mobility), ii) thermal behavior of buildings, iii) energy production/storage systems, iv) electricity micro-grids, v) control strategies of energy systems, vi) sharing economy in Energy and Transport using ICT/IoT.
The job consists in an initial 2-year full time position (with possibilities to an extension of two more years) within RIE at UMONS. The candidate will be recruited as a researcher (with the possibility of a PhD and the chance to have it as European/International Honor) in a cutting-edge research team dealing with energy storage systems (heat, cold), sustainable mobility (carpooling, e-mobility, etc.) and interconnection-communication of energy and transport systems under an IoT approach. The objective of this work is to provide an integrated optimization tool at the district/city level that makes possible the calculation and performance of a mixture of centralized (heat and cold production and storage) system as a function of its boundary conditions and given the main characteristics of its subsystems, considering also the local renewable energy sources of thermal solar, geothermal, etc., along with that of an electric vehicle sharing fleet (electrochemical of e-cars, e-bikes, etc.) equipped with an air pollution monitoring device communicating with the central system. The candidate and the existing team will have to interact strongly with various departments of the Institute participating in the project. The candidate will have to integrate her/his results within a global approach for city districts (in collaboration with other researchers). S/He will be involved in scientific communication (towards the scientific community as well as stakeholders).
