The corona pandemic has permanently changed the worldwide perspective towards air pollution and quality. As stated by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and many health authorities, cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses can be a direct consequence of exposure to air pollution.
The correct prediction of air pollutants in urban areas and in indoor configurations is of paramount importance. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is a very powerful tool to assess and predict air quality both in indoor and outdoor configurations. Nevertheless, advances in CFD are required to deal with complex geometrical configurations, large computational domains, and to improve the physical description of the dispersion process.
The objective of this PhD is to develop a multi-fidelity framework for the simulation of air quality in the context of external and internal flows. The objective is to develop reduced-order models for the fast evaluation of air quality parameters, based on the combination of numerical simulations and experimental data of different fidelity.
We seek a candidates (PhD level) with a background in one of the following areas:
An experience in air pollution experimental monitoring is a plus.

Description of the team and the environment
Aero-Thermo-Mechanics Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Brussels School of Engineering, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB).
The department is composed of four professors and approximately 40 researchers. The department is active in many Belgian and European research projects with strong national and international collaborations. The promoter of the project is Professor Alessandro Parente. Prof. Parente’s research activity includes turbulent/chemistry interaction in turbulent combustion and reduced-order models; non-conventional fuels (hydrogen ammonia and other solar fuels) and pollutant formation; novel combustion technologies, e.g. MILD combustion; numerical simulation of atmospheric boundary layer flows; and verification, validation and uncertainty quantification in computational fluid dynamics.
Professor Parente has authored more than 80 journal papers and 2 patents. In January 2015, Prof. Parente founded the BURN group (http://burn-research.be). The group involves 7 full time professors and around 40 researchers between ULB and VUB and aims at developing a world-class research group in combustion simulations and experimental investigations. This project is aligned with the research goals of the BURN group and will complement work currently be undertaken by ULB and partners.
Transfers, Interfaces and Processes (TIPs), Department of the Faculty of Applied Sciences, Brussels School of Engineering, Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)
The TIPs ( www.tips-ulb.be ) laboratory is composed of 6 professors and approximately 35 researchers. The objective of the research carried out at TIPs laboratory is the experimental characterization and the mathematical modeling of transport phenomena within systems containing several phases (gas and/or liquid and/or solid), exchanging matter, heat or momentum, through an interface between these phases, at scales between the micron and the meter. The research carried out revolves around mainly fundamental and/or generic questions. They have direct applications in the fields of health, environment, heat transfer technologies and agro-food, chemical, microtechnology, materials and space industries.
