The Department of Work and Organisation Studies (WOS) is an interdisciplinary group of about 50 scholars with backgrounds in economics, sociology, psychology, management and history, bringing different theoretical as well as methodological perspectives to the study of work. More specifically, the research at WOS aims to extend knowledge on employees’ and job seekers’ psychosocial well-being and on organizational practices, policies, and processes that affect the nature and conditions of work and the organisation of labour within the society. You will execute a scientific research project and write a PhD in the domain of HRM (recruitment and selection) and well-being. The purpose of this PhD is to contribute to the knowledge on how application processes affect candidates and organisations. The project will specifically focus on (a) what are the critical elements of an application process in creating the ‘candidate experience’; (b) how this candidate experience affects the mental well-being and future perceived employability of the candidate; (c) how this candidate experience affects outcomes relevant for the organization like intention to reapply, positive word of mouth/mouse; (d) and why family businesses could offer a better candidate experience and hence reach an advantageous position in the war for talent. This research will rely predominantly on quantitative methods (e.g., survey designs with vignette studies; diary studies, ..) and additionally on qualitative methods (e.g. in-depth interviews).
Duration of the project will be 4 years, counting from the first day of employment.
• You hold a master's degree in a Humanities and Social Sciences domain (e.g., Management, Psychology, Applied Economics, Business Engineering, Sociology, or other);
• You have received at least two 'honours' (i.e., cum laude, distinction) mentions over the course of your higher education, from which one ‘honour’ in your master;
• You have demonstrable experience with, or a strong interest in designing and executing survey and/or experimental studies;
• You are a good writer, and you are not afraid of public speaking (e.g. delivering a conference presentation, teaching a class);
• Your written and spoken English and Dutch are excellent (the data collection will be in Dutch);
• You are an intellectually curious, analytical 'idea person', with a knack for academic research and a proactive, self-directed approach to work;
• You are open to invest in your personal development
We offer employment as a full-time doctoral researcher in a stimulating environment where you predominantly work together with your supervisors, prof. dr. Diane Arijs and prof. dr. Rein De Cooman. We want to engage you in a process in which you can grow as a scientist to set up and publish rigorous and integer scientific research which is relevant for practice (for organisations, employees and job seekers in this project). We also aim to inspire you for and to support you in your personal development (e.g. in the domain of self-efficacy, proactivity, mental resilience). Other closely involved researchers in this research project on candidate experience are: prof. dr. Yves Van Vaerenbergh and prof. dr. Karin Proost.
We also offer you the opportunity to gain teaching experience, mainly on campus Brussels. The teaching support consists of supervising a fixed number of bachelor and/or master theses, support for exams and (preparation) of courses.
Start date: October 1st 2021 (can be discussed) after permission of the doctoral committee (see https://admin.kuleuven.be/rd/doctoraatsreglement/en/phdregulation-pes#section-2), for a period of 4 years (pending positive evaluation after 12 months).
