In the Science, Engineering and Technology Group, Faculty of Engineering Technology, Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT), ADVISE research lab, there is a full-time academic vacancy (part of the senior academic staff) in the area of Robust image sensors for extreme radiation environments on Geel Campus. We are looking for internationally orientated candidates with an excellent [interdisciplinary] research record, industrial experience and with educational competencies within the field of electronics. The research within the Advanced Integrated Sensing Lab (ADVISE) at KU Leuven Geel Campus focuses on the development of robust and radiant hardened electronics. The research group is internationally recognized for its expertise in modelling and design of integrated electronic circuits that withstand very high radiation doses. Such components are widely applied in current and future nuclear (fission and fusion) reactors (e.g. ITER), in high-energy physics experiments (e.g. installed on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN), in aerospace, aeronautics, medical imaging, nuclear safety, etc. The group is a member of the global CMS Collaboration at CERN (CMS is, in addition to ATLAS, one of the two biggest experiments linked to the LHC). ADVISE also has a structural cooperation with the ESAT-MICAS research division.
You will develop a research programme of international level in the field of fast, robust and radiation hardened image sensors in extreme radiation environments. Possible research topics are the development of new pixel architectures, sensor-readouts, integrated signal processing in image sensors, radiation detectors but also image sensors for X-ray, UV, infra-red and hyperspectral camera’s.
You work on electronic image sensor systems for challenging applications such as high-energy physics experiments, nuclear reactors, management and transport of nuclear waste, aeronautics and aerospace and medical (nuclear) imaging. You have the necessary knowledge for conceptual design, implementation and experimental verification of these systems in ionizing radiation facilities and have passed through the design cycle of radiation hardened integrated and components.
You support and develop radiation experiments for both research projects and collaborations with industrial partners. You will also develop electronic solutions to support other research groups on campus. You strengthen the lab by attracting or acquiring additional research lab equipment and infrastructure. You are able to obtain competitive research funding as well as bilateral industrial funding and to set-up projects in cooperation with industry, within Belgium as well as in an international context.
You will ensure international cooperation with academic partners, supervise PhD and master students and generate scientific output that meets the highest international standards. You strive for excellence in research and thus contribute to the further development of the ADVISE research group. You work closely with the other ADVISE researchers to support ongoing research projects and to set up future research projects.
You will engage in applied research through both public funding and local and international partnerships with various industrial partners (including SMEs) through projects and services. You pay the required attention to the valorisation of the results of your research into industry/government/society.
You provide high-quality education for both bachelor and master students in the field of analogue and digital systems and embedded electronics in the Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering Technology - Electronics-ICT, Electromechanics and Energy in the Faculty of Engineering Technology at Geel Campus with a clear commitment to the quality of the programme as a whole.
You contribute to the faculty’s and the university’s pedagogical project through the supervision of student projects (for example bachelor’s and master’s theses) and by acting as a promotor of PhD students.
You develop your teaching in accordance with KU Leuven’s views on activating and researched-based education and make use of the possibilities for educational professionalization offered by the faculty and the university.
Your teaching duties are determined in agreement and are based on your specific profile. The scope is limited in the first years of your appointment. In your further career, the faculty will also pay a great deal of attention to the balance between research and teaching time. Possibly, a limited part of your teaching activities will take place on another campus of the (multi-campus) Faculty of Engineering Technology.
You are prepared to provide scientific, societal and internal services. You maintain close contact with the local industry.
You play an active role in attracting new students to the Faculty of Engineering Technology and take part in information and PR activities of the faculty.
You play an active part in promoting the Faculty of Engineering Technology towards new students and the wider professional field by participating in open days, networking events and fairs,...
You hold a degree of Master of Science in Electronic Engineering or an equivalent degree, and a PhD where the subject of your doctoral thesis relates to the research field.
You have a strong applied research track record in the discipline, evidenced by your publications, patents and/or by your research experience in industry. You have the ambition to contribute to the valorisation of research in industry and in society. International experience as well as an elaborate industrial and academic network is an important advantage.
You have verifiable qualities related to academic education. Teaching experience is an advantage.
You possess organisational skills and have a cooperative attitude. You also possess leadership competencies in a university or industry context.
Proficiency in English is required.
