Degree: MSc in (bioscience) engineering, data science, computer science, applied mathematics, pharmaceutical engineering
Occupancy rate: 100%
Vacancy type: Research staff
The Research Unit on Knowledge-Based Systems (KERMIT, https://kermit.ugent.be/) of the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University has a vacancy for a PhD student to perform research in the field of data science (for drug development). The research unit is part of the Department of Data analysis and Mathematical Modelling and has a broad expertise in the theory and methods of machine learning/Artificial intelligence (AI), image processing & computer vision and mathematical modeling in the field of bioscience engineering. This position fits in a collaboration between KERMIT, the Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Process Analytical Technology and Janssen Pharmaceutica .
We are searching for a candidate with a strong interest in data science and artificial intelligence and its application in a pharmaceutical context. Preferred candidates have a background in data science, engineering, computer science , statistics or pharmaceutical engineering. The candidate will perform academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation. The subject will deal with the development of an AI-based expert system which can be used to assist lab-technicians during the development and optimization of drug formulations . Historically, drug formulation development has mainly been an expert-driven process relying on the skills of trained formulation experts. In this research project, we will develop and implement an AI-based expert system that can assist these experts and reduce the amount of experimental work that is needed. We will approach this problem from two different angles: (1) from a more fundamental/theoretical point of view on how expert/domain knowledge on this matter can be fused with historical data to build a strong artificial expert; and (2) from a practical angle in which a working prototype of the AI-based expert system is implemented.
You will need to write down the results in scientific articles and a PhD thesis. The preferred start date of the position is 01/09/2021 (with some flexibility).
Apply by e-mail to Nathalie.Detremmerie@UGent.be before the application deadline (see above). We do not accept late applications or applications that are not complete. Your application must include the following documents:
