Concawe is looking for a research associate to support the activities of the Fuels Quality & Emissions Management Group (FEMG), especially in relation to the JEC Consortium (JRC / EUCAR and Concawe).
Purpose of the Role and specific responsibilities:
The role of the Research Associate for Fuels & Modelling includes input to specific data analysis and research activities as detailed hereunder in support of the Economics & Modelling (CO2 & Energy) Science Executive (SE EM) as well as the Fuels Quality & Emissions one (SE FE).
Modelling and fuel expertise is at the centre of this Research Associate position and the work is directly linked to CONCAWE’s activities in the Low Carbon Pathways Joint group, the Fuels and Emissions Management Group, the JRC/EUCAR/CONCAWE (JEC) Consortium and related internal work. The work can be structured in such a way that projects can overlap and progress in parallel
- Support the development and implementation of the annual technical research plan as agreed with the relevant Joint and Management Groups and the Science Director. The scope of the work will be mainly focused on vehicle fleet modelling and carbon intensity/economic analysis for conventional and alternative fuels.
- Develop an in-depth knowledge of the European and global technical issues related to the transition to a low emissions future of the transport sector with special focus on the fields of fuels carbon intensity and vehicle fleet modelling. The RA will support SE EM and SE FE in conducting specific technical deep-dives on key low carbon technologies - fuel and powertrain related.
- The RA will be the responsible person within Concawe to run and maintain the JEC Fleet & Fuel Model, engaging with the JEC sub-group on fleet modelling and supporting the Concawe JEC coordinator (SE) in the associated tasks.
- Together with the SE Economics & Modelling, develop the scope, review proposals and manage projects (including cost control) related to improving and extending the scope of the JEC Fleet & Fuels model.
- Support Well-to-Wheels (WtW) and Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) activities, enabling science-grounded comparisons between different fuels and powertrains.
- In addition to the targeted activities described above, it can be expected that the Research Associate will be involved in related technical and cross-disciplinary projects and other fuels product quality and emissions related activities for FEMG including organization of and analysis/reporting of market survey data, analysis of emissions data.
The candidate may additionally be required to help in a variety of tasks, for example:
- Support the Science Executives and chairs of the Concawe Joint Low Carbon Pathways Project (LCP) and FE/STF-14 (Alternative Fuels/WtW) in the execution of their responsibilities.
- Liaise with external consultants in the development of the research programmes.
- Report progress and inform appropriate Management Groups, Science Committee as appropriate on his/her activities.
Assist in the writing and editing of CONCAWE technical reports, briefing papers, articles etc., on topics related to the field of activity.
Concawe: Background Information
Concawe is the science division of an international non-profit association (European Petroleum Refiners Association aisbl) whose mission is to provide research & technical support to the EU downstream oil refining industry in the study of environmental, health, safety and testing issues relating to the refining of crude oil and the distribution and use of petroleum products, with the aim of improving the understanding of these issues by the industry, authorities, users and other interested parties.
The Association represents the interests of 42 Companies operating petroleum refineries in the EU. Members account for almost 100% of EU petroleum refining capacity and more than 75% of EU motor fuel retail sales.
In addition, a wide variety of research is undertaken by Concawe in partnership with universities, research institutes and expert consultants to better understand controls on water use and emissions, the fate and effects of substances used and produced by the sector and the implications of proposed changes in EU legislation.
Education & Experience
Required qualifications and experience:
- A science/engineering background and a proven track record in a Member Company / oil refining industry, consulting firms, research institute or similar.
- Excellent computer skills and experience with XLS-based models and data analysis.
- Familiarity with Well-to-Wheels principles and modelling techniques to assess the CO2 impact of different technologies, alternative fuels and powertrains.
- Some familiarity with fuels product quality/specifications (both conventional and alternative), vehicle testing (although detailed experience not essential), vehicle fleet (Modelling experience in this field is desirable but not essential), and an interest in acquiring a more in-depth knowledge and working relationships with those active in these fields.
- Capacity to quickly learn and understand the oil industry issues.
Ideally the candidate would also have:
- Relevant postgraduate qualification or PhD.
- Keen interest and awareness of the European institutions decision-making processes for technical issues.
Skills & Competencies
- Good verbal and written English. Direct communication with Member Company and JRC/EUCAR experts and written documentation of results will be an expectation of this project.
- A team player with the capacity to effectively facilitate technical teams.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Self-starter and autonomous in his/her work
- Permit to work in EU
